You do not need to travel halfway around the world to find breathtaking beaches, majestic mountains, lush forests, and endless adventures. You would be amazed at just how much there is to do and explore right here in our own “backyard.” If you are ready to grab a map, hop in the car, and just drive, there is no better place to do that than in the Western United States. While there are so many road trip options, today we are focusing on two of our favorites.

This is the outdoor explorer’s dream trip. Bike, hike, and climb your way through Zion National Park, take a guided horseback ride through Bryce Canyon National Park, camp under the stars in Canyonlands National Park, and bring your trip full circle by taking in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon!
Cruise the Coast
The Pacific Coast Highway – also referred to as Highway One – is known as one of America’s best road trip opportunities. With cliff-hugging roads overlooking the Pacific Ocean and tons of interesting stops along the way, this road trip is bound to be a hit with everyone in the car. Here are a few of our must-visit stops while driving the PCH!
- For the animal lovers, visit the Elephant Seal Rookery in San Simeon or, if you are traveling between February and April, keep an eye on the water as this is whale migration season
- Stop at the Redwood National and State Parks to stand beside some of the tallest trees on Earth
- Grab a bite to eat and an incredible glass of wine in Mendocino
- Spend a few days exploring San Francisco – riding the cable car, touring Alcatraz, and snapping a selfie with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background
- Ride the iconic Pacific Wheel and try your hand at some of the amusement park games on the Santa Monica Pier.
Road Trip Tips
There is something magical about hopping in the car, stocking up on snacks, and cranking up the tunes. But it is important to remember that road trips require a little more preparation and coordination than typical vacations. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your road trip, whichever route you choose to take:
- Keep an eye on the tank – Be sure to check your map and fill up whenever you see yourself approaching areas that have limited gas station stops.
- Dress for the occasion – As you are driving through multiple states and landscapes, keep in mind the weather and temperature may change. Be sure to pack several types of clothing and shoes if you plan to explore!
- Smartphones Might Not Work – There will be certain areas during your road trip that are technology dead zones. Do not forget to bring a map, avoid taking roads or paths that you are not familiar with, and consider investing in a portable hotspot for when all else fails!
