Northumberland doesn’t get the same buzz as Edinburgh or the Cotswolds, but the coastal stretch between Bamburgh and Alnwick held its own against every other stop on our May 2026 UK trip. I built it as one day. I’ll say it plainly: it’s not quite enough, and here’s what I’d do differently.
Is Bamburgh Castle Worth the Drive South from Edinburgh?
Bamburgh Castle sits on a stretch of coastline you can see from miles away before you actually arrive, and that sightline alone makes the drive worth it. It’s been a stronghold in one form or another since the Anglo-Saxon kings of Northumbria, and it’s the real-life namesake behind Bebbanburg, the fortress Uhtred spends most of The Last Kingdom trying to reclaim. Standing in front of the actual castle after watching that story play out on screen was a genuine moment for me, I’m a fan of the show, not just a tour guide reciting facts.
Bamburgh has also turned up in Downton Abbey, which surprises people who only know it as a Last Kingdom location. Between the history and the film connections, it earns its place on a British Isles itinerary on its own, before Alnwick even enters the conversation.
What Is Alnwick Castle Actually Famous For?
Most people know Alnwick Castle for one reason: Harry Potter. The broomstick training scenes were filmed on the grounds, and that alone brings a steady stream of visitors who’ve never heard of the Percy family.
The Percys have owned Alnwick for over 900 years, and they still live there, which is why only parts of the castle are open to visitors. That’s not a limitation, it’s the reason the place feels lived-in rather than preserved behind glass. The library was redone recently and it’s genuinely gorgeous, worth slowing down for even if you’re not a book person. There’s a Dragon Quest area for kids and a restaurant built in the trees, so it’s not purely a fan pilgrimage stop, it has range.
One small thing that will save you an awkward moment: it’s pronounced ANN-ick, not ALN-wick. I found that out the hard way, out loud, to a local. Consider this your warning.
How Far Apart Are They, and How Should You Order the Day?
Bamburgh and Alnwick sit close together on the map, roughly half an hour apart along the coast, which is exactly why pairing them in one day looks so reasonable on paper. We did Bamburgh first and Alnwick second, working our way south, and I’d make that same call again. Bamburgh rewards an earlier arrival before the light gets harsh on the coastline, and Alnwick’s library and grounds are the kind of stop you want to hit without watching the clock.
Is One Day Enough for Both Castles?
Not if you want to do either one justice. We made it work, but I was already mentally building an extra night into future clients’ itineraries before we’d even left Alnwick’s parking area. The library alone could have used another thirty minutes. The castle grounds and gardens at both properties reward wandering, not checking off.
One day gets you there and gets you the highlights. It doesn’t get you the version where you’re not watching the time.
What I’d Change if I Planned This Day Again
It depends on the traveler. If you’re building a fast-moving England and Scotland itinerary and Northumberland is a stop along the way, one focused day still works, you’ll see both castles and feel good about it. If Northumberland is more of a destination in its own right for you, or you’re a Harry Potter or Last Kingdom fan who wants to actually sit with these places, I’d build in a second night and split the day in two.
Neither approach is wrong. It’s a question of what you came for and how you want the day to feel, not a right or wrong answer.

Timing, pacing, and which parts of Alnwick and Bamburgh are actually open on the day you’re visiting are all things worth mapping out before you go, especially if you’re combining this with a longer British Isles itinerary.
