Off the Beaten Path in Belize

Adventure and beauty? That’s what you’ll get when you visit our next must-explore destination. If disconnecting from the world and taking some time off the beaten path sounds like your dream vacation, Belize may just be for you!

Where Wildlife and History Flourish

Ancient Maya Ruins and untouched tropical rainforests make this the perfect place for wildlife to roam freely! One of the most important ruins in Belize is Caracol. Hidden inside the Chiquibul Forest, this massive ruin covers about 25,000 acres (about the area of Manhattan) of exploration opportunities. Even if you have not brushed up on your ancient history, you will be in awe of the highlights of this site. A “Sky Palace,” splendidly preserved temples, ceremonial pyramids, astronomic observatories, and ball courts – yes, you read that right – you will get a small glimpse into what life may have been like for the Ancient Maya. You may even catch a glimpse of Caracol’s current residents – colorful parrots, foxes, or tapirs… maybe even a jaguar.

If you would like to see Belize’s wildlife without trekking through the forests, you can also visit the Belize Zoo! In this twenty-nine acre forest oasis, you will meet over 150 animals, from forty-five distinct species, that have been rehabilitated, orphaned, and rescued!

Endless Islands, Endless Activities

Belize may not be known for its beaches, but it makes up for it with a mind-blowing number of islands. From small one-acre islands to giant ring-shaped islands called atolls, you will never run out of places to explore! Since Belize is small, you could easily charter a boat and go island hopping to get your fill of swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing for a few hours and enjoying a drink or two.

If islands are not your preference, you could also spend time hiking, rafting, or spelunking through the mountains, rainforests, and jungles of Belize.

Local Fare

Food in Belize is as fresh as it gets. There may not be any five-star restaurants, but you will fall in love with the wide variety of cuisine during your stay. Mouthwatering seafood – like lobster, swordfish, and conch – and fresh fruits and veggies are shipped daily to all areas of the country. This means that no matter where you eat, you will always be in for a delicious meal.

While you are visiting, here are a few dishes you must try:

  • Rice and Beans – You may be wondering why something so simple is on the list, but the Rice and Beans in Belize are so flavorful and pair nicely with any meal. The rice and beans are cooked together and lovingly seasoned with local spices to give it a special kick!
  • Tamales – Also known as Bollos, this traditional Mesoamerican dish is made from corn dough and seasoned meat or poultry. Unlike the tamales in Mexico, Belizean tamales are wrapped in plantain leaves and then steamed!
  • Salbutes – These small fried corn tortillas are topped with a mix of crunch cabbage, seasoned chicken, creamy avocado, and a little (or a lot of) hot sauce!
