Seeing the World at 50 and Beyond

Your fifties are called the start of your “golden years” for a reason. Think of it as your second childhood but with more freedom to do what you want. Most people are starting to consider retirement at this age, which leaves some free time to start making those bucket list dreams a reality! The only question now is… where to first?

Let’s Cruise

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a cruise. The perks are endless – excellent service, great food, and your own private room as you visit some of the world’s most beautiful places. If you’d like to cruise without school-age children or younger couples, opt for fall getaways, longer itineraries (anything twelve days or longer), and luxury cruise lines. While they may be a little higher price range than popular “water park” cruises, you’ll have a more tailored experience. Need some ideas where you can visit on a cruise? Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Alaska – If you don’t have a passport but want a breathtaking experience, an Alaskan cruise may be the perfect option. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, there is something for you.
  • Europe – When we talk about cruises, most travelers instantly think of Ocean Cruises. But a river cruise is an incredible experience for first-time cruisers or those who like a more personal touch. You can travel down one of Europe’s many scenic rivers and stop at some of the continent’s most beautiful countries!
  • The South Pacific – Islands like Tahiti, French Polynesia, and Fiji will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a completely different world. Immerse yourself in the rich culture and natural splendor of each island or just spend a few days relaxing on the beach, sipping cocktails from coconuts, and catching gorgeous sunsets with your significant other!

All Aboard!

While traveling by train may not be the first idea that comes to mind, there are some amazing railway trips in the U.S., Europe, and Peru that will take you through multiple cities, countries, and must-see natural wonders.

  • The Venice Simplon-Orient Express – One of the best-known railway trips in the world. As you enjoy your 1920s styled cabins, you’ll be taken back in time as you travel from London to Venice.
  • California Zephyr – Pass through some of the United States’ most awe-inspiring landscapes from Chicago to California. Some highlights include the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevadas, Glenwood Canyons, and San Pablo Bay.
  • The Belmond Hiram Bingham – A luxury ride through Peru, from Cusco – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World! In addition to once-in-a-lifetime views, you’ll also enjoy incredible Peruvian cuisine, lively music and dancing, and delectable cocktails.

The Sunshine State

If sun, sand, and fun are calling you, Florida is the perfect place to spend some time! Florida is a melting pot of cultures and, because of that, offers a variety of eateries, adventures, and activities for visitors of all ages and interests. Not only are there miles of gorgeous beaches on both the East and West Coast, but you’ll also have your fill of shopping opportunities, decadent resort spas, fantastic museums, and – if you’re looking for a little spice – exciting nightlife. We recommend considering Naples, Miami, or Key West for your next Florida visit.

As you can see, there are some incredible options for those looking to start traveling in their 50s and beyond! But this list is just the tip of the iceberg.
